Text: "For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3; see also verses 1-11).
Thoughts: "Christ . . . is our life" (v. 4). This position and possession in Christ is provided by God through grace, entirely apart from human effort or merit.
1. The Source of Life in Christ. "Your life is hidden… in God" (v. 3). In His high priestly prayer, the Master reminds us that to know the true God, and Jesus Christ whom He sent, is life eternal (see John 17:3). As the source of all things, God is also the Fountainhead of this fullness of life that is to be enjoyed in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
2. The Security of Life in Christ. "Your life is hidden with Christ in God" (v. 3). Jesus expressed the same thought in the tenth chapter of John when He said, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand [and] … My Father's hand" (vv. 28,29). No wonder Chrysostom could answer so confidently when his emperor threatened to take his life unless he recanted his faith and renounced the Savior: "You cannot, your Majesty," was the saints unwavering reply, "for my life is hid with Christ in God."
3. The Secret of Life in Christ. "If then you were raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is" (v. 1). To look above, and to draw upon the resources that are available in our risen Lord, is the secret of victorious living. How wonderful it is to know that there is no demand made upon our life which is not also a demand upon His life in us. "Christ . . . is our life."
Thrust: Only Thy love can meet my soul's deep sadness; Only Thy power from sin and self can free; Therefore I come, to plunge me in Thy fullness, And lose my life, to find my all in Thee.
