PC-USA Won't Deny Gay Ceremonies

A majority of the 173 regional governing bodies in the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A. (PC-USA) has refused to ratify a proposal to bar PC-USA ministers from officiating at so-called gay "commitment" ceremonies, the Associated Press reports.

The measure was originally passed by the denomination's national assembly last June, but needed confirmation by a majority of presbyteries to take effect. The proposal was an attempt to overturn a 1991 ruling by the church's highest court that opened the door to clergy participation in gay ceremonies, as long as they were not called weddings.
