Praise and Prayer

Praise: Craving more meaning in their lives, many baby boomers are answering the call of religious careers, says the November, 2001, issue of Reader's Digest New Choices magazine. "Baby boomers are deeply concerned with self-actualization and spiritual growth," says Bradley Creed, a Samford University (Birmingham, Alabama) professor of religion. "By middle age, many have paid off bills, taken care of responsibilities, and can finally afford to explore their spiritual side." In 1999, 52 percent of the students in schools of the Association of Theological Schools were 35 or older, up from 45 percent in 1991.
