Pray: A deaf 51-year-old Christian charity worker from the United Kingdom, Ian Stillman, lost his appeal of drug smuggling charges in January and faces 10 years in prison in India. Ian was arrested in August, 2000, while traveling by taxi to Manali via a route that is used by drug smugglers. He has languished in jail in inhuman conditions for the past year and a half. During his trial, the judge made no allowance for Ian's deafness and did not provide an interpreter. Ian Stillman set up the Nambikkai Foundation in 1978 to provide training, employment and education for deaf people in India. Observers have said that religious persecution is implicit in the case, since ‘Western' is associated with ‘Christian' and Hindu fundamentalists claim Western Christians in India are forcibly converting Hindus to Christianity.
