Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook
Holman Bible Publishers, 2004, ISBN 1558199640, 404 pages, $7.97, softcover.
By Glen H. Jones

This volume makes an excellent companion to the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, a comprehensive treatment of biblical terms and of background material. The Handbook gives concise background material for each of the sixty-six books of the Bible.

Each of the biblical books is placed in its historical and chronological setting with emphases on the theme and major characters in the book. The Handbook discusses the date and authorship of each of the sixty-six Bible books. The relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ—past, present, or future—is noted. The reader can be assured that the material is presented from a conservation scholarly viewpoint.

Maps, charts, and photographs of archeological artifacts enhance its ease of reading. Some maps usually not found in other Bible handbooks are the journey of the twelve spies sent by Moses to reconnoiter the Promised Land, Solomon’s construction activities, the province of Judah showing Nehemiah’s enemies in the fifth century B.C., and the journeys of Jesus from His birth to early childhood.

Photographs of archeological artifacts include the tomb of Cyrus the Great, the traditional tomb of Esther in modern Iran, the traditional prison in Philippi where Paul and Silas were imprisoned, and the Temple of Augustus where Paul was executed.
