Our faith must be a first-hand discovery, not a second-hand story.
True obedience neither procrastinates nor questions. There is only one real inevitability: It is necessary that Scripture be fulfilled God creates out of nothing. Wonderful, you say. Yes, to be sure, but what is still more wonderful: He makes saints out of sinners. On Advent and Christmas A prison cell, in which one waits, hopes, and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside, is not a bad picture of Advent. Christmas has lost its meaning for us because we have lost the spirit of expectancy. We cannot prepare for an observance; we must prepare for an experience. The most glorious promises of God are generally fulfilled in such a wondrous manner that He steps forth to save us at a time when there is the least appearance of it. This is Christmas: not the tinsel, not the giving and receiving, not even the carols, but the humble heart that receives anew the wondrous gift, the Christ. When Christ entered our world, he didn’t come to brighten our Decembers, but to transform our lives. If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three words, these would be the words: “God with us.” Take Christ out of Christmas, and December becomes the bleakest and most colorless month of the year. Jesus Christ became Incarnate for one purpose, to make a way back to God that man might stand before Him as He was created to do, the friend and lover of God Himself. You can never truly enjoy Christmas until you can look up into the Father’s face and tell him you have received his Christmas gift. The cry of this world for meaning and hope and life, was met one morning far away in the cry of a tiny babe. And with that cry time stopped and started again. And it was new. On Self-Control A man’s conquest of himself dwarfs the ascent of Everest. Anger is momentary madness, so control your passion or it will control you. The man who loses his head is usually the last one to miss it.
The best way to save face is to keep the lower part shut.
To stay out of hot water, keep a cool head. |
