Misconceptions of Ministering Intro: Jesus corrected any misconceptions James and John (and their mother) may have had about ministering. Yet we still have misunderstandings about ministering. This message seeks to clarify them. 1)“Ministering Is the Duty of One Individual” i) The word “minister” simply means “to serve,” and all Christians are to minister (1 Pet. 4:10-11). (1) Women ministered to Jesus (Luke 8:2-3). (2) Children ministered (1 Sam. 3:1). ii) All saints are to be prepared for the work of ministering (Eph. 4:11-12). 2) "Ministering Is a Glamour Job” i) Those in our text had this idea. ii) Those who have abused the pastorship have created this misconception. iii) Note Paul’s description of ministering (2 Cor. 6:3-10; 11:23-28). iv) Jesus ministered in washing feet (John 13:3-17). 3) “Ministering Is an Easy Job” i) But the Bible repeatedly calls ministering a work! 4) Tim. 4:5; Eph. 4:12; Heb. 6:10. 5) “Ministering Is an Optional Task” i) Serving God is imperative, not optional. ii) We are to give ourselves to it (Rom. 12:6-7; Acts 6:4). iii) We are to fulfill (finish) it (Col. 4:17; Acts 20:24). iv) We will give account of it (1 Cor. 4:1-2). v) The house of Stephanas was addicted to ministering (1 Cor. 16:15). |
