The Virgin Birth

Introduction: The teaching that Jesus was born of a virgin, rather than of natural reproduction, faces the opposition of skeptics. How important is this teaching to the Christian faith?

  1. Consider six Bible passages related to the virgin birth:
    1. The virgin birth is intimated in Genesis 3:15.
    2. The virgin birth is prophesied in Isaiah 7:12.
    3. The virgin birth is explained in Luke 1:26-38.
    4. The virgin birth is confirmed in Matthew 1:19-25.
    5. The virgin birth is intimated in Galatians 4:4.
    6. The virgin birth is required by Hebrews 1:2,3; 10:5.
  2. Consider the consequences related to the virgin birth:
    1. The myth theory consequences:
      1. The myth theory contradicts the truth of the Bible record (Matt. 1:21-23);
      2. The myth theory condemns Mary as a fornicator (Matt. 1:18,19);
      3. The myth theory condemns Jesus as illegitimate (Deut. 23:2);
      4. The myth theory reduces Jesus to a human martyr.
    2. The virgin birth miracle consequences:
      1. All the Bible references are factual, (I. A - F above)
      2. Jesus has a prepared body (Heb. 10:5);
      3. Jesus emptied Himself of glory for man (Phil. 2:5-11);
      4. Jesus is the last Adam (1 Cor. 15: 45);
      5. Jesus is the God-man (1 Tim. 2:5).

Conclusion: Let us rejoice in the benefits of God's wonderful plan in the birth of Jesus by a virgin.
