Wonderful

"And His name shall be called wonderful . . ." (Is. 9:6).

"Wonderful" means: unique, special, unusual, one of a kind. Christ is unique. There has never been anyone like Him. He is unusual. He is special. He is wonderful in many ways.

  1. His birth was wonderful.
    1. Planned (Gen. 3:15). One would come through the seed of the woman, who would defeat the power of Satan. Here we have the first prophecy of the coming Christ.
    2. Prophecy (Mic. 5:2). The prophet gives the name of the town where Christ would be born. This was 700 years before His birth.
    3. Powerful (Is. 7:14). Christ would be born of a virgin. This would be a supernatural birth. Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit. This makes Him divine.
  2. His life was wonderful.
Giving help to the people (Acts 10:38). Note how Jesus went about doing good.
    1. Giving hope to people (John 3:16). Giving hope beyond this life. Note this everlasting life (John 11:25, 26).
    2. Giving healing to the people (Matt. 8:16). He healed all, both spiritually and physically.
  3. His death was wonderful.
    1. Planned death (Ps. 22). Years before Christ was born, His death was planned by God. Prophetic death (Is. 53). The prophet Isaiah tells of the future sufferings and death of Christ.
    2. Powerful death (John 19:30). When Jesus said, "It is finished," He was saying, "Now the price of salvation is paid for." No longer would man have to make animal sacrifices.
  4. His resurrection was wonderful.
    1. Power of resurrection (1 Cor. 15:54). Death is destroyed in the victory of Christ.
    2. Pardon through resurrection (John 11:25, 26). This pardon cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7).
    3. Promise through resurrection (John 14:19). Because He lives, we, too, shall live forever.
  5. His ascension was wonderful.
    1. Power (Acts 1:9–11). He ascended into heaven as He promised in John 14:1–3. The earth could not hold Him.
    2. Promise (John 14:1–3). Though He went away, He will return. We will be like Him (1 John 3:2, 3).
    3. Peace (John 16:33). Christ brings peace. Later, Paul speaks of this peace of mind (Phil. 4:7).
Conclusion: When one accepts Christ as Savior, He is made more wonderful. He is wonderful in saving us, keeping us, healing us, protecting us, being with us. As we live near this wonderful Savior, we will become more like Him. We will please Him. We will not be perfect, but our lives will show the beauty of Christ.
