Arriving at the inn of Sonceboz, my father, while unhooking his knapsack, said to the mistress of the house that he would be conducting evening worship with us after supper, and that she would be welcome if she liked to be present with her household. 'We have no need of all that here,' replied the woman, seeming very busy, and adding some expressions of impatience. My father immediately resumed his bag, and grasping his stick, said to me: 'Do you feel that you still have legs for an hour's walk, my boy?' Then, without noticing the astonishment of the hostess, who wished to detain him, he added: 'Come, my children, I will not pass the night under a roof where prayer is despised, and where God is not feared.'
