Laying Aside Weights
Hebrews 12:1
By Bulletin Digest

Well-trained basketball players know what a “medicine ball” is. When baseball players wait in the on-deck circle, they often swing a weighted bat. Ancient athletes trained for races by running in the sand with weights attached to their ankles. The idea is that when the excessive weights are discarded in favor of the real thing, the balls, bats, and feet will seem much lighter, and the athletes can perform significantly better.

The writer of Hebrews said, “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Heb. 12:1).

Christians need to lay aside the weight of sinful impulses, wrong attitudes, and limited knowledge of the Scripture so that our hearts and lives can portray the righteous character of Christ that He desires to show to the world. We cannot run His race with the weights still attached.
