Our Relationship With the Lord Not Based on His Gifts
by Charles E. Harrel"The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord"
(Job 1:21 nkjv).
Give and take-an interesting combination. These two words are the same ones my mother used on my wedding day. She told me the best marriages were ones established by give and take relationships. She felt partnerships so based, were more intimate and provided for stronger family bonds. It seems that God had the same kind of relationship in mind for an individual named Job.
Satan intended to destroy Job's relationship with the Lord by causing embarrassment in heaven, but Satan misjudged their bond. Although God had given much to Job over the years, Job never based his relationship on the giving. Instead, Job founded his affinity with trust, respect, and worship. So when God allowed certain things to be taken away, Job's confidence never wavered. "In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong"
(Job 1:22 nkjv).
Job knew his relationship was being tested; God knew it was growing stronger and more intimate. In the end, God exalted and honored Job for his faith.
