Manual for Ministry

by Stephen F. Olford

Thought: This is the seventh principle that the Apostle Paul lays down for purity and unity in the church at Corinth. While its immediate reference has to do with the exercise of gifts in the church, the wider application touches life at every level.

I. The Manual Is Inclusive in Its Application to the Ministry. "Let all things be done..." The apostle leaves no excuse for oversight or negligence in the details of the church. In God's view:

<![if !supportLists]>·        <![endif]>Small things are significant: "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Cor. 10:31);

<![if !supportLists]>·        <![endif]>Small things are potent: "God has chosen...the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence" (1 Cor. 1:28,29).

II. The Manual Is Incisive in its Application to the Ministry. "Let all things be done..." Like James, Paul makes it clear that all believers should be "...doers of the word, and not hearers only..." (James 1:22).  The verb "done" is in the present imperative-the order or command is to have a continuous or repeated application

III. The Manual is Impressive in its Application to the Ministry.  "Let all things be done decently and in order" or "properly and in an orderly manner." The Holy Spirit employs two significant words to describe the impressiveness of what He expects of all of us in what we do.

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>The Beauty of Openness. "Let all things be done decently..." This word comes from the Greek schema with a prefix meaning "beautiful arrangement"-open for all to see!

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>The Duty of Orderliness. "Let all things be done (in an orderly manner)." There is a military ring about this word. Paul tells us that "…God is not the author of confusion...but of order and peace"

<![if !supportLists]>·        <![endif]>(1 Cor. 14:33).

                                                        To the glory of God,

                                                        And the Spirit to prod,

                                                        We must give our life's best

                                                        If we'd pass heaven's test
