Don't Waste Your Life

by A. Karen Davis

The Bible says, "You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." John Piper continues, "I have written this book to help you taste those words as sweet instead of bitter or boring." He restates his central idea emphatically, "If you live gladly to make others glad in God, your life will be hard, your risks will be high and your joy will be full. This is not a book about how to avoid a wounded life, but how to avoid a wasted life."

The ten tightly-written purposeful chapters in this book address both Christians and non-Christians. Chapters 1 and 2 share a readable spiritual autobiography showing his discovery of a single focus for his life.

Piper presents well-developed topics such as "Boasting Only in the Cross,' "Magnifying Christ Through Pain and Death," and "Risk Is Right-better to lose your life than to waste it."

Notice the effective reasoning in chapter eight as he directs the reader to "Make much of Christ from 8-5." Here are a few of the ideas about work from this insightful writer: "Front line Christians are those who strategically remember the supremacy of God in the workplace. Remember we work to glorify God by the quality of our work. We can remain in fellowship with God while at work if we are thankful and remember His promises. Be a portrait of God' so non-believers will see God. Work helps us be givers and not takers in life. Make service, not the paycheck, your goal.

John Piper teaches with power chapter by chapter. His writing encourages believers to live out a single-minded passion for the supremacy of God.
