Exploring the Mind & Heart of the Prince of Preachers

by Bob Dasal

I have admired C. H. Spurgeon's way of expressing things for more than 40 years. As a pastor for 29 years, I collected his sermons in the Metropolitan Tabernacle series. Studying Spurgeon's sermons was a regular part of my weekly preparations for preaching. Quotable quotes would jump out at me and my people heard Spurgeon quotes often. As John MacArthur said in the Forward to the book, "Spurgeon was the master of the pithy quote."

Kerry Allen has collected in this volume more than 5,000 illustrations and stories from Spurgeon's sermons and writings, and sorted them under more than 1,000 topical headings. Divided into sections, there is one of general interest and one primarily for those in ministry. A third section has salvation illustrations and anecdotes. Every page is packed with quotes that illustrate and help the reader understand the great truths of Scripture.

Most of the quotes were gleaned from the sixty-three-volume set of Spurgeon's sermons, currently being reprinted by Pilgrim Publications. If you want to locate a particular quote, Allen has attempted to make it easy to find it. For example, if a quote is referenced as 1822.78, that quote will be found in sermon number 1822 on page 78 of the original volume. In addition, the book has a synonym-grouping appendix with forty-four main headings. This makes searching for related synonymous illustrations easier. Coupled with the extensive system of referencing the source materials for additional reading and study from the original writings, this is an indispensable volume for the preacher who wants to say it well. You will enjoy this book. It could easily become a book you can't do without.
